Sean Astin

Award-winning Actor, Director, and Producer

Sean Astin is an award-winning actor, director, and producer whose four-decade career includes some of the most beloved and influential films of our time. He is widely recognized for his iconic roles as Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Mikey in The Goonies, and the inspiring underdog Rudy Ruettiger in Rudy. His work has earned him global acclaim and a reputation for portraying characters defined by courage, loyalty, and heart.

Sean’s diverse career also includes standout television performances such as Bob Newby in the hit series Stranger Things. In addition to his expansive acting career, Astin has contributed behind the camera as both a filmmaker and producer, earning an Academy Award nomination early in his career for his short film Kangaroo Court. He is also highly regarded for his extensive voiceover work, lending his voice to fan-favorite projects including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Justice League, Meerkat Manor, Special Agent Oso, and numerous animated films and video games.

A second-generation performer, Sean is the son of Academy Award–winning actress Patty Duke—who earned the Oscar for The Miracle Worker—and actor John Astin. His brother, Mackenzie Astin, is also an accomplished actor. Sean and his wife, Christine, have three daughters (Ali, Elizabeth, and Bella). His eldest daughter, Ali, has appeared alongside him in several projects and is continuing the family’s acting tradition.

Sean is a graduate of UCLA, where he earned a B.A. in History and English. A dedicated lifelong learner, he later completed a Master’s degree in Public Administration and Public Policy at American University, which also awarded him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

In 2025, he was elected National President of SAG-AFTRA, the union representing U.S. actors and media professionals. By stepping into this role, he follows in the footsteps of his mother—herself a former President of the Screen Actors Guild—making him the first second-generation leader of the union in its history.

Beyond his work in entertainment, Sean has long demonstrated a commitment to service and personal growth. He has completed multiple marathons, including the Marine Corps Marathon and the Boston Marathon, and successfully finished the Ironman World Championship Triathlon in Kona, Hawaii. He has served on nonprofit boards, volunteered extensively, and supported initiatives related to climate activism, literacy, civic participation, and mental health awareness.

Sean is also a passionate advocate for emotional well-being. Inspired by his mother’s advocacy and his own desire to reduce stigma, he has spent years speaking publicly, supporting national campaigns, and encouraging open, compassionate conversations around mental health, resilience, and community care.
