- Tony Dorsett
Heisman Winner, Super Bowl Champion, Hall of Famer, Tony Dorsett – A Legacy of Greatness On and Off the Field Tony Dorsett Heisman Winner, Super Bowl Champion, Hall of Famer, Tony Dorsett – A Legacy of Greatness On and Off the Field Anthony Drew was born to Wes and Myrtle Dorsett on April 7, 1954, in Rochester, Pennsylvania. When his parents moved to be near the Jones and Laughlin Steel Mill in Aliquippa when Tony was young, they hoped at least one of their seven children would reach beyond the town's limits. Tony was the one who did. He had visions that went beyond the steel gray hue of the Western Pennsylvania projects that he called home. While Tony was still attending Hopewell High School in Aliquippa, his coach made a wise decision to switch him from linebacker to running back. Dorsett gained 1,034 yards as a junior in high school, and his record of excellence continued unabated when he moved up a step to the University of Pittsburgh. Dorsett's record with the Panthers was legendary. He was named to an All-America team as a freshman and again as a junior and senior. Playing under Coach Johnny Majors, Dorsett became the first college back to run for 1,000 or more yards four seasons and the first to gain more than 1,500 yards for three years. His best season as a senior saw him running for 1,948 yards and 21 touchdowns. He crowned a brilliant collegiate career by being named All-American four times and winning the coveted Heisman Trophy in 1976. He is considered one of the greatest running backs in college football history. In the 1977 draft, the Dallas Cowboys were quick to select Tony in the first round. He won consensus rookie of the year honors in helping Dallas win Super Bowl XII. Tony is one of the top ten all-time leading rushers in the NFL. In 1982, Tony captured his first NFC rushing title and established an unbreakable NFL record by racing 99 yards from scrimmage for a touchdown. Tony served as team captain in '81, '82 and '84. He was voted to the Pro Bowl in '78, '81, '82 and '83. In 1981 he earned consensus All-Pro honors and was named NFC Player of the Year by UPI. In a 1979 Gallup Youth Survey of American teenagers' favorite sports personalities, Tony finished second to Roger Staubach. 1994 was a banner year for Tony. He was inducted into the prestigious Dallas Cowboys’ Ring of Honor, the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Today, Tony lives with wife Janet in the Dallas area and has three beautiful daughters and a son, Anthony, who also played in the NFL. Tony is involved in many community activities and charities in Dallas, including ALS, March of Dimes, Minnie’s Food Pantry, and the Tony Evans Ministry. Tony also supports the McGuire Memorial Foundation in Pittsburgh. - Dat Nyugen
All-American, Cowboy Legend, and Trailblazer - Defying Odds, Defining Greatness , First Vietnamese American All-Pro in the NFL, Chick-fil-A Franchise Owner Dat Nyugen All-American, Cowboy Legend, and Trailblazer - Defying Odds, Defining Greatness , First Vietnamese American All-Pro in the NFL, Chick-fil-A Franchise Owner (Born September 25, 1975) is a former football player, who was a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) for seven seasons. He played college football for Texas A&M University and earned All-American honors. He played professionally for the NFL's Dallas Cowboys and became the first Vietnamese American to be drafted, play, and be recognized as an All-Pro in the NFL. In 2017, he was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. Early Years Nguyen's family left South Vietnam during the fall of Saigon at the end of the Vietnam War, and he was born in a refugee center at Fort Chaffee in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He lived most of his childhood in the Gulf Coast town of Rockport, Texas. At Rockport-Fulton High School, Nguyen played middle linebacker and handled punting duties. Nguyen earned All-State honors as a punter. Nguyen was recruited and received scholarship offers from Michigan, UCLA, Notre Dame, Texas, and Florida. Nguyen eventually decided to play closer to home and chose Texas A&M University. College Career Nguyen attended Texas A&M University, where he played for the Texas A&M Aggies football team from 1995 to 1998. He battled the perception that he was too small to play linebacker for as long as he was involved in the game, despite his muscular 5'11", 238-pound frame. Proving critics wrong at an early stage, he finished his college career as the Aggies' career record holder with 51 consecutive starts, 517 career tackles, and a 10.7 tackles-per-game average. His 517 career tackles are a Texas A&M record. He is the only Aggie to ever lead the school in tackles for four consecutive years. It is widely acknowledged that Nguyen was the undisputed on-field leader of the famous "Wrecking Crew" defense, as well as being its most famous and decorated player. In 1995, he was named Southwest Conference Defensive Newcomer of the Year. From 1996 to 1998, he earned first-team All-Big 12 honors three consecutive times. In 1997, he was named Aggies MVP. In 1998, he was named a consensus All-American by every awarding publication, won the Bednarik Award for College Defensive Player of the Year, and the Lombardi Award for Outstanding College Lineman. Nguyen was also selected as a finalist for the Butkus Award, eventually becoming first runner-up. Nguyen missed winning the Butkus Award by a single vote out of more than 45 votes cast. It remains to date the closest vote in Butkus Award history. He was named Defensive Player of the Game for the 1998 Cotton Bowl after recording a bowl-record 12 tackles, including three tackles for a loss, and an interception, which he lateraled to a teammate for a touchdown. The Dallas Morning News named him Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year in 1998, and he earned Defensive Player of the Year honors in the Big 12 Conference. He also won the Jack Lambert Award in 1998. That same year, Texas A&M won the Big 12 championship game against Kansas State which is to date their last conference title. In 2005, he was named to the Big 12 Conference's 10th Anniversary Team. In 2010, he was voted on to the AP All-Time Big 12 Team tying with former University of Texas player Derrick Johnson for most votes at linebacker (19 out of 20.) Nguyen is generally acknowledged as the best defensive player in Texas A&M football history and one of the greatest defensive players of all time in the history of the Big 12 Conference. In 2004, Nguyen was inducted in the Texas A&M Athletics Hall of Fame. In April 2007, Nguyen was also inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and the AT&T Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame. On January 9, 2017, the National Football Foundation announced Nguyen was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame, an impressive class that included Peyton Manning, Adrian N. Peterson, Marshall Faulk, Steve Spurrier, and Brian Urlacher. Professional Career - Dallas Cowboys The Dallas Cowboys drafted Nguyen in the third round (85th overall) of the 1999 NFL draft, after his status dropped because he was considered small and slow for an NFL linebacker. Nguyen made an impact with the Cowboys from the beginning, leading the team in special team’s tackles (18) as a rookie and becoming the Cowboys' starting middle linebacker in his second season, after Randall Godfrey left via free agency. In 2000, he played 10 games (five starts) and registered 64 tackles, after missing six contests with a sprained knee and losing his starting job to Barron Wortham. The next year, he completed his first full season as a starter and finished with a team-leading 172 tackles. In 2002, while playing against the Houston Texans in the season opener, he suffered a broken wrist that forced him to miss the next eight games. Despite the serious injury, he finished the Texans game with a team-high 11 tackles (one for a loss) and one sack. When head coach Bill Parcells arrived in 2003, he was critical of the linebackers in the Cowboys roster, joking publicly: "If this were the circus, we could fit them all into one of those Volkswagens that 10 clowns climb out of." The next season, he would pay Nguyen a compliment when he said: "He's a football playing dude, that guy. ... You bet he could have played for any of my teams". In 2003, with Nguyen leading the team in tackles, the Cowboys were the second-most effective defense in the NFL and he was selected second-team All-Pro by the Associated Press. In 2004, Parcells implemented his preferred 3–4 defense and Nguyen repeated as the team's leading tackler, but the additional hits he received in this scheme started to affect his health. In 2005, he started the first four games before suffering a neck injury that sidelined him for three games. He returned as a nickel linebacker and played in four more games, before being placed on the injured reserve list on November 28, after the Thanksgiving Day overtime loss against the Denver Broncos. He finished the season with 31 tackles and one sack in eight appearances. Nguyen officially retired from the NFL on March 3, 2006, after a neck injury and knee problems, which hindered his performance, failed to improve. He led the team in tackles three times, in 2001, 2003, and 2004, and amassed 516 tackles in seven seasons, despite missing half of two separate seasons to injury. For his NFL career, he was named to the 2013 class of Texas Gridiron Legends. Coaching Career - Dallas Cowboys In February 2007, Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips announced the hiring of Nguyen as assistant linebackers coach and defensive quality control coach. Along with Phillips' son Wes, Nguyen was the first assistant hired under Phillips. Nguyen left the Cowboys on January 27, 2010. Coaching Career - Texas A&M Nguyen was named the inside linebackers coach at Texas A&M University on February 12, 2010. In Nguyen's first year as the A&M inside linebackers coach, the Aggies went 9–3 in the regular season with wins over nationally ranked Oklahoma and Nebraska, as well as wins over Texas and Texas Tech. This marked the first time in school history that A&M had beaten all four of those teams in a single season. The resurgence of the Texas A&M defense to its former glory as the "Wrecking Crew" and particularly the outstanding play of the linebacker corps has been cited as a major reason for the team's 2010 season success. Nguyen helped cement linebacker Von Miller's status in Texas A&M history by coaching him in the 2010 season, which led to Miller being awarded the 2010 Butkus Award. At the conclusion of the 2011 season, Nguyen retired from coaching at Texas A&M. Personal life Nguyen married his college sweetheart, Becky, and they have three daughters and twin boys. In May 2004, Nguyen was awarded a Golden Torch Award at the Vietnamese American National Gala in Washington, D.C. He was also featured in HBO's Hard Knocks. In 2012, he became cohost with Jason Minnix of an afternoon sports talk program on ESPN in San Antonio. In March 2016, Nguyen accepted an opportunity to become an Owner/Operator of a Chick Fil-A franchise located at Montgomery Plaza in Fort Worth, Texas. - Morton Andersen
Discipline, authentic, purposeful, stubborn, will, fearless Morton Andersen Discipline, authentic, purposeful, stubborn, will, fearless Born and raised in Copenhagen, Denmark, Andersen came to the U.S. as an exchange student, attending Ben Davis High School. The school had no soccer team, so Andersen tried out for the football team on a whim and quickly became the team’s kicker. It didn’t take long for colleges to notice this new talent. The next season, Andersen was playing for the Michigan State Spartans. At Michigan State University, he was named All-American and Academic All-Big Ten in his senior season. The New Orleans Saints drafted Andersen in the 4th round of the 1982 NFL Draft. His first year was challenging. After his first kickoff he injured his foot, forcing him to miss the next eight weeks of a strike-shortened season. However, it did not take long before Andersen earned the name, “The Great Dane”. By the time he was done, Andersen made 6 Pro Bowls and 309 out of 389 field goals attempted. He scored 1,318 points during the time he played for the Saints. After the 1994 season, the salary cap was adopted in the NFL. Negotiations with the Saints fell through, and so Andersen signed with the Atlanta Falcons for the ’95 season. In his first year with the Falcons, Andersen made Pro Bowl, with 31 of 37 goals attempted. In ’98, he made the most memorable kick in Falcons history when he kicked a 39 yard goal in overtime to defeat the Vikings in the NFC Championship. Andersen stayed with the Falcons through the 2000 season. He then spent a season with the New York Giants, two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, and a season with the Minnesota Vikings before finishing his career with the Falcons in 2007. During that last season, he had the most accurate season of his career, making 25 out of 28 field goals attempted. During his remarkable career in the NFL, Andersen is the only player to hold statistical franchise records for 2 NFL teams. He played in a record 382 games. He’s also the lead scorer in the history of the NFL and the all-time leader in field goals made. Morten Andersen Global was started in 2009. - Dr. Bertice Berry, Sociologist, Lecturer, Author and Mother
When You Walk with Purpose, You Collide with Destiny Dr. Bertice Berry, Sociologist, Lecturer, Author and Mother When You Walk with Purpose, You Collide with Destiny No one defies stereotypes, generalizations or clichés more than Dr. Bertice Berry. Growing up poor in Wilmington, Delaware, the sixth of seven children, Bertice was told by a high school teacher that she was “not college material”. Fortunately, there was another teacher who believed that she was destined for more. Berry applied to several schools without any idea how she would pay the tuition if she were accepted. The day her application arrived at Jacksonville University in Florida, a wealthy benefactor called the Admissions Department looking for a potential student “who could swim if they had the right backing,” and might sink without it. Bertice not only graduated magna cum laude from Jacksonville where she was awarded the President’s Cup for leadership, she subsequently earned a Ph.D. in Sociology from Kent State University at the age of 26. Dr. Berry taught sociology and statistics at Kent, and demonstrated that she knew a few things about humor, as well. She became one of the most popular teachers at the university; so popular, in fact, larger lecture halls had to be found to accommodate the ever-increasing number of students. A colleague said to me, “You’re funny, and I said, No I’m not, I’m a scholar,” recounts Dr. Berry. It was then that she realized by using humor in her lectures to address such difficult subjects as racisms and sexism she was making a more profound impact. Shortly thereafter, Berry left Kent to become an award-winning entertainer, lecturer and comedienne. From 1991 through 1994 she won the coveted national Comedian of the Year Award, and was also named Campus Lecturer of the Year and Campus Entertainer of the Year. She had created a niche as both a gifted speaker with a comic edge and a comic with a serious message. Her busy schedule included over 200 appearances a year. Berry was the host and co-executive producer of her own nationally syndicated talk show, “The Bertice Berry Show,” and hosted “USA Live,” a four-hour live interview and entertainment show on the USA Cable Network. She’s been featured on numerous other television programs, including appearances on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” ABC’s “20/20” and more recently on NPR’s “Tell Me More” with Michel Martin. Dr. Bertice Berry is also the best-selling author of an inspirational memoir, I’m On My Way, But Your Foot Is On My Head, and the hilarious bestsellers Straight From the Ghetto, You Might Be Ghetto If and the sequel You STILL Ghetto. Her latest book, “A Year to Wellness and Other Weight Loss Secrets” is a personal journey of healing and wellness that resulted in a weight loss of 150 lbs. Despite all of her honors and achievements, Dr. Berry is most proud of becoming the “instant mother” to her five children. She lives in Savannah, GA where she is active in the community. “When you walk with purpose,” Berry says, “you collide with destiny!” TOPICS Change & Transformation Redefining Diversity Becoming The Highest Version of Yourself From The Patient’s Perspective Finding Your Purpose Life Work Balance Redefining Diversity From The Patient’s Perspective Life Work Balance BOOKS The World According to Me I’m on My Way But Your Foot Is On My Head Redemption Song The Haunting of Hip Hop Jim & Louella’s Home-made Heartfix Remedy When Love Calls You Better Answer The Ties That Bind A Year to Wellness and Other Weight Loss Secrets PAST CLIENTS America Online Pacific Bell GMAC Sam’s Club/Walmart Agilent Technologies Blue Cross Blue Shield KU Medical Center Kaiser Permanente American Airlines Walmart
