His first real job was with Nova Stylings, a fine-jewelry manufacturer, where he learned the vital skill of sales. Guy’s big break came when he joined Apple, thanks to his Stanford roommate Mike Boich. At Apple, he evangelized the Macintosh and played a key role in its success. During this time, Guy met his wife, and he credits Apple as a pivotal point in his life. After leaving Apple in 1987, Guy started a Macintosh database company called ACIUS, which produced the product 4th Dimension . He later transitioned to writing, speaking, and consulting, contributing to MacUser, Macworld, and Forbes. In 1989, Guy co-founded Fog City Software, which created an email product called Emailer and a list server product called LetterRip . By 1995, Guy returned to Apple as an Apple Fellow, during a time when many pundits believed the company was on the brink of collapse. His mission was to maintain and rejuvenate the Macintosh cult. In 1997, he left Apple to start Garage.com , a service connecting angel investors with entrepreneurs. Today, Garage Technology Ventures is a venture capital firm that invests in early-stage tech companies. Guy continued his entrepreneurial ventures, co-founding Alltop, a website that aggregates RSS feeds and organizes them by topic. He also served as a special advisor to the CEO of Google’s Motorola division in 2013. In 2014, he resurrected the role of "chief evangelist" and joined Canva, an online graphic-design service. But perhaps the most telling statistic of his greatness is his 2,427 games behind the plate—the most by any catcher in major league history, and few have done it with such excellence. Born on November 27, 1971, in Manatí, Puerto Rico, Rodríguez honed his skills in the baseball-obsessed culture of his homeland before signing with the Texas Rangers as a free agent at just 16. By 1991, he was already considered one of the top catching prospects in the game, known for his legendary arm. He made his MLB debut with the Rangers on June 20, 1991, finishing fourth in the Rookie of the Year voting and quickly solidifying his reputation as an elite defensive catcher. In 1992, Rodríguez won his first Gold Glove Award and made his first All-Star Game appearance, beginning a dominant career behind the plate. Offensively, he soon blossomed as well, achieving eight consecutive seasons batting over .300 starting in 1995, while also adding power to his game. In 1999, Rodríguez won the American League MVP after a career year—hitting .332 with 35 homers, 113 RBIs, and 25 stolen bases. He became just the eighth catcher in history to record 100 runs and 100 RBIs in a season. Rodríguez's career took another turn in 2003, when he joined the Florida Marlins for a one-year stint, hitting .297 with 16 home runs and 85 RBIs, leading the Marlins to the postseason. He was named NLCS MVP and helped propel the team to a World Series title. Afterward, he signed with the Detroit Tigers, bringing veteran leadership to a rebuilding team, and in 2004, he led them to a 29-game improvement, winning his seventh and final Silver Slugger Award. In 2006, Rodríguez led the Tigers to the World Series. He spent his final seasons with the Yankees, Rangers, Astros, and Nationals, retiring after the 2011 season with 2,844 hits—the most by any player with at least 50% of their games played as a catcher. Over his 21-season career, he finished with a .296 batting average, 311 home runs, 572 doubles, and 1,354 runs (the most ever by a catcher), along with 1,332 RBIs. Standing at a towering 6 feet 8 inches, the Jackson, Tennessee native was simply too tall for opposing linemen and quarterbacks to handle. Jones was a standout high school basketball player and was recruited to Tennessee State University, where he initially played basketball for two years. Fortunately for TSU—and eventually, the NFL—he made a life-changing decision to switch to football. His choice paid off, earning him All-American honors in both his junior and senior years. Jones gained national recognition in 1974 when the Dallas Cowboys selected him as the first overall pick in the NFL Draft. As a dominant defensive end, he spent 15 seasons with Dallas, setting a franchise record with 194 career starts before retiring at the end of the 1989 season. A key force in the Cowboys’ legendary “Doomsday Defense” of the 1970s, Jones consistently earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. He played in 20 playoff games and was selected for three consecutive Pro Bowls from 1981 to 1983, earning All-Pro honors in 1981 and 1982. His contributions helped propel the Cowboys to three Super Bowl appearances, winning Super Bowl XII in 1978 and solidifying their reputation as “America’s Team.” In 1979, Jones took a brief hiatus from football to pursue professional boxing, compiling a perfect 6-0 record before returning to the Cowboys just a year later. Former Commander, USS Benfold and Author, It's Your Ship Mike Abrashoff Former Commander, USS Benfold and Author, It's Your Ship At the age of 36, the Navy selected Abrashoff to become Commander of USS Benfold – at the time, the most junior commanding officer in the Pacific Fleet. The immediate challenges that faced him on this underperforming naval warship were staggering: exceptionally low morale, high turnover and unacceptably low performance evaluations. Few thought that this ship could improve. In many ways, the USS Benfold was actually an extreme example of the same problems facing many organizations today. The solution was to establish a system of management techniques that Abrashoff calls The Leadership Roadmap. At the core of his leadership approach on Benfold was a process of replacing command and control with commitment and cohesion, and by engaging the hearts, minds, and loyalties of workers – with conviction and humility. “The most important thing that a captain can do is to see the ship through the eyes of the crew.” According to Abrashoff, The Leadership Roadmap is a practice that empowers every individual to share the responsibility of achieving excellence. “It’s your ship,” he was known to say. His former sailors to this day still remind him of it. By every measure, these principles were able to achieve breakthrough results. Personnel turnover decreased to an unprecedented 1 percent. The rate of military promotions tripled, and the crew slashed operating expenses by 25 percent. Regarded as the finest ship in the Pacific Fleet, Benfold won the prestigious Spokane Trophy for having the highest degree of combat readiness. Most important – this transformation took place with the same crew. What had changed was the ship’s culture and Abrashoff’s leadership style. Abrashoff recounted the leadership lessons from the turnaround of USS Benfold in It’s Your Ship, a New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller, with over 800,000 copies sold to date.
